Job Description

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is the governing and regulatory body for British horseracing, which seeks to ensure the effective regulation, integrity and success of the sport. Except in commercial areas, the BHA's role is to act for and on behalf of the whole sport, ensuring that the highest standards apply on and off the racecourse. It aims to be a global leader in racing regulation and works with stakeholders to promote the sport in order to make Great Britain the home of the most compelling racing in the world.

The BHA, together with British racing’s other leading organisations, has published an “Industry Commitment” to diversity and inclusion, to ensure racing truly is a sport for everyone and to help the sport grow and thrive in the future. As part of this, the BHA wishes to increase its Board diversity across all protected characteristics, and in particular in relation to ethnically and culturally diverse communities.

The BHA is seeking to appoint an Independent Regulatory Non-Executive Director (iNED), who will succeed Sir Paul Stephenson at the end of his term of office. The BHA has two Regulatory iNEDs, who serve as Board Directors on all matters, as well as also bringing particular expertise relating to the BHA’s regulatory functions. In this case, the BHA is looking for a Director who will bring expert knowledge of intelligence gathering, investigation and/or enforcement.

The successful candidate will bring experience of some or all of these functions at a senior level, gained in a career in any relevant sector. An inquisitive and intuitive thinker, they will be able to remain objective in scrutinising BHA’s work, advising on that and holding the executive to account. They will have excellent communication and strategic thinking skills. Previous non-executive experience is not required.

In accordance with the Industry Commitment, applications from candidates from ethnically and culturally diverse communities are particularly welcomed and encouraged.

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to the BHA on this appointment.
