The role

Pricing and Underwriting is a huge part of the fabric of DLG and consists of c. 200 technical specialists with varying interests. We recognise the value that each of them brings. Their diversity and their different approaches to problem solving is key to our success.

We have a host of interesting brands and business’ within the group, one of which is our InsureTech start-up Darwin. Darwin launched in spring 2019 with a mission of evolutionising insurance and bringing something new to the market using the latest technologies such as machine learning!

What you'll be doing

We work in teams of multi-disciplinary people, and depending on your core specialism and personal interest you may end up spending the day with Engineers, Marketing and Customer specialists working together to drive our market footprint for Darwin, building out its renewals function or using your data science skillset to identify new segmentation opportunities.

DLG has an agile operating model which means that if you join us you aren’t locked into a specific product or feature forever, but instead you form part of a cohort of Pricing and Underwriting Specialists and have the opportunity to flex, move and follow your own development journey across our products – so if you’ve wanted to try something new for a while, you should consider us!

Here are some examples of activity you can be involved in at DLG

Grow and evolve our start-up InsureTech business Darwin, disrupting the industry through machine learning and innovative use of data

Work on Direct Line, our most famous brand, working to keep us in the post of “best at direct”

Work on Churchill and our motor or home insurance offering there (Oh Yes!)

Work with Green Flag, our rescue product on literally rescuing people in need, as well as using data and algorithms to predict and prevent incidents happening in the first place

Join our Pricing and Underwriting Centre of Expertise to drive policy and thought leadership across the chapter

Become a Chapter Lead (people leader) and dedicating part of your time to coaching and developing others to become even better P&U specialists

Do all the usual things you’d expect like pricing modelling, PCW optimisation, policy review, underwriting checks and control review, problem solving and adopting to changing market influences etc.

What we are looking for

We are keen to meet enthusiastic and curious individuals from all sorts of specialisms across P&U, whether that’s Motor Retail, Renewals, Home, Actuarial or something very specialist like Geospatial, Governance and Control, or individuals keen to focus on Data Science, coding in R and using Emblem.

We are also open to individuals whom want to be people leaders, if you are passionate about coaching and developing others, we’d love to hear from you as well.

Who you'll be working with

We work cross functionally within a team or “squad” as we call them with lots of different people with different specialist skills. One of these individuals will be assigned the role of product owner and will ensure that as a team you are prioritising and delivering on time. You’ll have a chapter lead (people manager) whom you build a relationship with and who supports your personal development. You’ll also meet within P&U, with town halls of all 200 of you or in smaller focus groups where you'll be sharing knowledge and ideas, thoughts and ways of working.

We have adapted to new ways of working and recognise the huge benefits a flexible approach to working location has brought for our employees. We still want to meet up and collaborate as teams, and will continue to do so in the future – but many of our roles will continue to be predominantly home based because that’s what our people want.
