Job Description

Natural England

Senior Advisers – Connecting People with Nature

Opening up the benefits of nature in England to a wider variety of people and communities could be your most rewarding role yet. Because everything’s better with nature. You included.

At Natural England, we advise the UK Government on the natural environment. We’re here to make sure people and nature can thrive. From collaborating on sustainable development and nature recovery, to shaping strategic plans for nature-rich places, to enabling more diverse people to connect with nature, we love what we do. Join us and you’ll be part of an inclusive, motivated and ambitious team, committed to achieving results for our environment, for everyone.

As one of our nationwide team of Senior Advisers for Connecting People with Nature, you’ll focus on removing the barriers than different people and communities face in accessing the natural world. These could include people with disabilities, people from ethnic minority backgrounds and those living in areas of multiple deprivation or other hard-to-reach communities. Expect to take the lead on flagship local delivery projects, for example: connecting with new partner organisations, identifying opportunities for funding, making green social prescribing more easily available, and encouraging the development of high quality green infrastructure. You’ll also act as a champion for equality diversity and inclusion (ED&I) within the area team, helping to embed inclusive thinking in all we do, and identifying any additional training and support that might be needed.

We’re looking for people with extensive experience in community development and engagement. That means people who can take information and evidence and turn it into ideas and projects that improve lives. While an interest in conservation and the natural world is welcome, a background in the environmental sector is not essential as our training and support will provide you with all the knowledge you need. Far more important are your people skills and the ability to reach out and develop new relationships and partnerships. As some travel to remote rural sites will be required, a driving licence would be useful.

We welcome and encourage applications from all communities and, wherever possible, we accommodate requests for both full and part-time hours and other flexible working patterns. Everyone at Natural England is supported to develop their skills and capabilities. You can also look forward to great benefits including a Civil Service pension.
