Summary

This role will include working with external contractors to develop an approach that measures the impact of the vast range of Global Events activity that the Department delivers. This includes activity such as the Dubai Expo 2020 (one of the highest profile events the UK will support since the London Olympics), the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and the Osaka Expo 2025.

The role will play a crucial part in shaping the UK’s trade and investment promotion strategies by evidencing what does and doesn’t work.

The successful candidate will undertake a wide variety of tasks to improve public value (outcomes) of trade and investment global events activity. You’ll be working closely with colleagues from across the Department and will be part of the wider DIT analytical community.

Job description

The successful candidate will play an important role on key strategic projects for the Global Events function. The role has the following responsibilities:

•Working closely with the G7 Event Evaluation lead, you will use strategic thinking and need to understand global events and analysis across DIT in order to maximise the impact of the analysis undertaken.

•Development of advice, presentations and sharing of emerging findings to senior officials. This requires good presentation and communication skills as well as the ability to identify those messages important to senior managers.

•Management of contractors and research projects including research budgets where relevant.

•Work closely with events colleagues to ensure trade show planning has evidence embedded to determine the clear value to HMG.

Responsibilities

No direct line management responsibility but will have indirect management of team members in specific tasks and be expected to support the wider insight and evaluation team with developing staff.

Essential Criteria Skills

1) A strong and broad understanding of insight and evaluation, and with experience of applying these skills in similar roles in the public or private sector.

2) Ability to combine rigour with clear communication, including to both communications and analyst audiences.

3) Ability to work flexibly across several competing projects and to deliver high-quality work to deadline.

4) Ideally be a member of one of the Government analytical professions or have an interest in exploring further joining an analytical profession (and be prepared to go through the assessment process for admission to one of the professions as part of this application).

Desirable Criteria

Previous experience of working in either communications, marketing or events and/or international trade and investment. There will be training opportunities to either brush up or learn about these while working if required. There are also training and mentoring opportunities available within across the Civil Service.

Professional Expertise

Although not essential, it would be beneficial to belong to one of the following Government analytical professions; Government Social Research; Government Statistical Service. If you do not belong to one of these, you can chose to go through the assessment process for your chosen profession as part of the selection process for this role (default profession will be GSR). The candidate should demonstrate how they meet the technical and professional competence requirements for their profession at SRO/SSO level. Competency frameworks for Government Analytical Professions are available online. Selection is likely to consist of a 10 minute presentation or other exercise, on a topic to be notified in the event that the candidate is shortlisted for interview.

Personal Attributes & Skills

You will have experience of working in analytical roles where you have been involved in design, development, specification, commissioning, delivery and/or quality assurance of insight and evaluation projects.

You will be highly motivated with a good track record of getting things done, working collaboratively with others to deliver results. You will have the ability to build strong and effective working relationships with your colleagues and stakeholders and have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, that allow you to tailor your delivery to a wide variety of audiences.

Work Permit:
