Job Description

Fixed Term ? up to 12 months / 37.5 hours per week Based in Islington, London As Press Officer here at Greenpeace, you?ll play a pivotal role in gaining coverage for our campaign work and identifying opportunities for Greenpeace to make strategic interventions that help us win. Greenpeace is an international non-profit global campaigning organisation. Our independence and global reach enables us to stand for positive change through action in order to defend nature and promote peace. We investigate and expose global environmental problems, confront those in positions of power and present alternative solutions. As one of our Press Officers, you will lead investigations into our targets and ensure the results get huge publicity, furthering our campaigns. Greenpeace's Press Officers are on the frontline of the political battle to protect our environment. We need a politically savvy media operator who enjoys the cut and thrust of the daily news cycle, has a good grasp of all UK media, and has some understanding of who holds the power and pulls the strings when it comes to UK and global policy. For this role we are looking for someone with solid experience of generating high-quality media coverage for campaigns across a wide range of media outlets, from local media to newspaper features, TV news, and consumer magazines. Experience of working on international campaigns and coordinating press initiatives with organisations based in multiple countries will also be a bonus. You?ll be great at spotting opportunities to intervene in political debates, and be able to translate complex political, scientific and environmental information into succinct and clear messages that successfully reach our target audiences. As well as your communication, interpersonal skills and diplomacy, this role will also test your ability to organise and improvise. You will need to be equally adept in facing and communicating with openly hostile audiences as with the passionately supportive. You will also have an understanding of the value of investigative work and of the role of mobilising audiences towards political action. You?ll believe in our aims and will be able to demonstrate experience as a press officer or journalist. Some UK and overseas travel may be involved and, to ensure 24 hour cover, you?ll take part in an on-call duty rota. You will contribute to our fast-moving strategic campaign planning and development, and at times, you may also be required to work on one or more of our campaigns ? to clean up air pollution, defend our oceans and protect the world?s rainforests. You must be able to demonstrate that you are eligible to work in the UK. Applicants must be able to take up the position within one month of an offer. Due to the urgent nature of this appointment, recent applicants to the permanent post in the press team should not reapply, unless they are available to start work within one month of an offer. How to apply For further information and to download a Job Pack please visit our website. We ask that all applicants for this post complete the online Monitoring Form along with their application. Closing date: 9am Monday, 27 February 2017 Interviews to be held w/c 6th March 2017
