Job Description
Time commitment: minimum of 20 days per annum
The General Dental Council is the regulator of professional standards in dentistry in the UK. We are a statutory corporation, independent of both the dental profession and of Government, although we work closely with both. Our job is to ensure that dental care is delivered only by suitably qualified professionals with current expertise who understand and take seriously their obligations to patients. We regulate across the whole dental team dentists, hygienists, nurses, orthodontists and technicians.
The GDC now wishes to increase its pool of Legal Advisers to advise its Practice Committees (the Health Committee, the Professional Conduct Committee and the Professional Performance Committee) as well as the Interim Orders Committee and the Registration Appeals Committee on questions of law which may arise in the proceedings before them, in accordance with Schedule 4C paragraph 1 to The Dentists Act (the Act) 1984, as amended.
The Act provides that Legal Advisers shall be barristers, advocates or solicitors of at least 10 years' standing, who are currently in practice and hold a practising certificate for the full period of their appointment with the GDC. It would also be beneficial if applicants are on the current list of another healthcare regulator and be able to demonstrate recent experience sitting as a Legal Adviser or Assessor with other UK healthcare regulators or tribunals, or have comparable experience.
Currently, almost all GDC hearings take place in London but some hearings may be held in the regions in future. Applicants should be prepared to sit in London or any other location within the UK. There is no specified time commitment but applicants should be prepared to commit to a minimum of 20 days per year.

Closing date: 12 noon Friday 8 July 2016
The GDC is committed to promoting equality and diversity.
